Patio Installation & Design in Minnetonka & Lake Minnetonka
Custom-designed patios built with premium Belgard pavers and natural stone. From intimate courtyards to expansive entertainment areas, we create outdoor surfaces that define your landscape.
The Foundation of Every Great Outdoor Space
A well-designed patio does more than add square footage to your home. It becomes the centerpiece of how you live outdoors, the place where meals happen, conversations linger, and evenings extend well past sunset. In the Lake Minnetonka area, where the landscape rewards those who invest in it, a custom patio transforms sloped yards, awkward transitions, and underused greenspace into something you use every day from April through October.
At Landscape Charlie, we approach every patio as a design-build project. Charlie Kraemer has been installing patios across the western suburbs since 1995, and as one of only 12 contractors on the Belgard Advisory Council nationally, our material knowledge and installation standards go beyond what typical contractors offer. We design for the way Minnesota's freeze-thaw cycles stress hardscapes, specifying proper base depths, joint stabilization, and drainage that keeps your patio level and beautiful for decades.
Decorative concrete pavers and natural stone are the primary materials we work with. Partnering these materials with smart design creates warmth, movement, and even curiosity in the way patios and walkways are installed. Every project begins with a site visit and 3D design so you see your patio before a single paver is placed.
Paver vs. Natural Stone vs. Concrete: Which Is Right for You?
Each material brings distinct advantages. Here is how they compare for Minnesota patios.
| Feature | Belgard Pavers | Natural Stone | Poured Concrete |

| Design Flexibility | Wide range of shapes, colors, and patterns. | Unique, organic look. Each piece is one of a kind. | Limited to stamps and stains after pour. |
| Maintenance | Low. Individual pavers can be replaced if damaged. | Low. May need periodic re-leveling on sand set. | Medium. Cracks require professional patching. |
| Cost Range (installed) | $22-$38 per sq ft | $30-$55 per sq ft | $10-$18 per sq ft |

From Concept to Completion
Every patio project follows our proven design-build process. No shortcuts, no surprises.
Site Analysis
We evaluate grade changes, drainage patterns, soil conditions, and sun exposure. In Minnesota's clay-heavy soils, base preparation makes or breaks long-term performance.
3D Design
You see your patio rendered in full 3D before we begin. We adjust materials, layout, and features until the design matches your vision and your property's potential.
Base Preparation
We excavate to proper depth (typically 8-12 inches in Minnesota), install geotextile fabric, and compact Class 5 aggregate in lifts. This is where most contractors cut corners. We do not.
Installation & Finishing
Pavers are hand-placed to pattern, cut precisely at borders, and locked with polymeric sand. Edge restraint ensures nothing shifts. Your patio is ready to use immediately.
How Much Does a Patio Cost in Minnesota?
How much should a 20x20 patio cost?
A 20x20 patio (400 square feet) in the Lake Minnetonka area typically costs between $8,800 and $15,200 installed, depending on material selection and site conditions. Belgard pavers average $22-$38 per square foot installed, while natural stone ranges from $30-$55 per square foot. These figures include excavation, base preparation, material, labor, and polymeric sand.
Sites with significant grade changes, poor drainage, or difficult access can add 15-25% to the base cost. We provide detailed, itemized proposals so you know exactly where every dollar goes.
Is it cheaper to lay pavers or concrete?
Poured concrete costs less upfront, typically $10-$18 per square foot installed versus $22-$38 for pavers. However, concrete in Minnesota rarely lasts more than 15-20 years before cracking from freeze-thaw cycles requires full removal and replacement. Pavers, properly installed with a compacted aggregate base, last 25-50 years and individual units can be replaced without disturbing the rest of the surface. Over a 30-year period, pavers cost roughly the same as concrete when you factor in replacement cycles, and they look significantly better throughout their lifespan.

Patio Installation FAQ
Most residential patios take 5-10 working days from excavation to completion. Larger projects involving retaining walls, fire features, or multi-level designs can take 2-4 weeks. Our building season runs from late April through November, with peak demand in June through September. Projects scheduled in spring or fall often have shorter lead times.
In most cases, a standard at-grade patio does not require a building permit in Minnetonka or Shorewood. However, if your project involves retaining walls over 4 feet in height, structures like pergolas, or work within shoreline setback zones near Lake Minnetonka, permits are required. We handle all permit applications as part of our design-build process and are fully licensed in Minnesota (License #BC684026).
We install a minimum of 6-8 inches of compacted Class 5 aggregate base for standard patios, and 10-12 inches for areas with heavy clay soils or vehicular traffic. Minnesota's frost depth reaches 42-60 inches, so proper base preparation and drainage are critical to prevent heaving. Many contractors skimp on base depth to save costs. That savings disappears the first spring when the patio shifts and settles unevenly.
